Summer Clean Nighttime Skincare Routine
There’s something about developing a basic summer skincare routine that makes me feel like a real adult.
It took me a while to get my footing with clean skincare products that are effective and have safer ingredients. But now that I have, my regimen is solid.
Remember those 50-step Korean-inspired skincare routines that were popular at one point? Yea, this post is not one of those. I live for a less is more approach.
Don’t get me wrong, it can be thrilling to try something new. But a more minimal, less wasteful approach works better for my current lifestyle.
The more steps a routine has, the less likely I am to do it. Sure, some days I want to pamper myself. But most days, I just need to clean my face and moisturize. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Transitioning to fewer products with safer ingredients also makes investing in what you actually need and use easier. I’m more likely to splurge on something since it’s one of only a few products I’ll be purchasing.
3 Tips for Choosing Your Key Clean Skincare Products:
- Know your skin type and concerns. Is your skin oily or dry? Do you deal with flaky skin or dark circles? Focus on choosing products that address your main concerns.
- Research before you run out of your current products. Don’t wait until you’re in a hurry to try to find a replacement for something.
- Download the EWG Healthy Living app. Use this to scan or search products that you’re thinking about trying to check that they truly have safe ingredients.
My current staples are items that I’ve used for at least a year now and can say they consistently work well for me.
You’ll notice that most of my essentials are from Beautycounter. This is because they awarded me the Impact Scholarship last year, so they sent me tons of products.
Having said that, I’m genuinely in love with the brand and everything they stand for. They also have strict standards for their products, so I can trust they’re as safe as possible. #Betterbeautyforall.
Double cleansing is a must on the days that I wear makeup. I find that it’s the only way to remove waterproof mascara. This one breaks down all of your makeup and helps me avoid stripping my skin of its moisture. The bottle is so big that it also lasts FOREVER. I’ve had my current bottle for over a year, and I’m only about halfway through it.
There’s something about foaming cleansers that just make you feel clean. Even though it’s foaming, it doesn’t make my skin feel tight afterward.
I take a slightly unconventional approach when it comes to moisturizing. Since my skin tends to get oily, I only use a serum. This one gives me enough moisture, so I don’t usually feel compelled to use a separate moisturizer.
If for some reason, my skin is a little dry or I need a boost, this moisturizer does the trick.
I’m probably about to state something blasphemous: Eye cream is an optional step for me. It’s not something that I feel like I need to use.
In theory, the other products end up around your orbital bone, right?
I haven’t found a clean eye cream that’s wowed my socks off. But I have this one by Biossance on my list. I’ll be trying it out during the next Sephora sale. If you have any recs, please do drop them in the comments.
I use this mask once or twice a week and even on my armpits. It gives the skin a nice little detox along with salicylic acid for exfoliation.
Here’s to keeping it simple this summer, even when it comes to your skincare routine!
Have you tried any of these? Let me know in the comments.
